Could the Cigarette Ban in Britain Drive Bingo Enthusiasts Online?

An abundance has been talked in the press not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hurt because of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for huge tax breaks to help keep the businesses afloat. But does the online version of this quintessential game offer a lifeline, or will it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar equivalent?

Bingo is an classic game usually enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had witnessed a recent resurgence in appeal with younger members of society opting to visit the bingo halls in place of the discos on a Friday night. All this is about to be destroyed with the enacting of the smoking ban throughout Britain.

Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes whilst marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 every public area will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favorite locations where many people enjoy smoking.

The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already barred in the bingo parlours. Profits have dropped and the industry is literally struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they have not abandoned this age old game?

The answer is on the internet. Players realise that they can wager on bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a beer and smoke and in the end, have a chance at massive prizes. This is a recent development and has happened almost perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course playing on the web is unlikely to replace the collective portion of heading over to the bingo parlour, but for a group of people the rules have left a good many bingo players with no alternative.
