Bingo and Oklahoma: 2 birds of a feather

[ English ]

Oklahoma has for a long time been synonymous with Bingo. That is owing to the fact that the Indian tribes of Oklahoma have operated Bingo sessions for generations. Patrons from every one of the neighboring states load up in passenger cars and head over to Oklahoma to wager on Bingo over the weekends.

The 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) became law after a landmark decree by The U.S. Supreme Court the year prior. Since that instance, 23 of the thirty nine Indian bands of Oklahoma have opened gaming halls. The Chickasaw were the 1st Oklahoma Amerindian band to take advantage of the gambling laws, and at this time control ten gambling halls of their own. Bingo was the game on which these casinos were founded. Electronic games such as slots were not approved, because they are thought to contribute to gambling problems more than bingo.

In recent years, Oklahoma law has changed to permit gigantic American Indian wagering gambling dens. You’ll now discover Indian gambling dens with slot machines, video poker and vingt-et-un tables. Craps and roulette are not allowed in the Indian casinos yet, although this is just a waiting game. No one can determine what having different games in the bingo parlors will do for the appeal of bingo.
