Much has been written in the press not long ago about the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the anti cigarette law in England. Things have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive tax cuts to help keep the industry alive. However will the online version of this quintessential game present a lifeline, or might it never compare to its land based equivalent?
Bingo has been an enduring game normally enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. However the game recently had experienced a recent comeback in appeal with younger people deciding to hit the bingo parlours in place of the discos on a Saturday night. All this is about to change with the legislating of the cigarette ban all over United Kingdom.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes at the same time dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common areas where folks enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo parlors. Profits have plummeted and the industry is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Of course they haven’t abandoned this ancient game?
The answer is on the net. Gamblers know that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beer and cigarette and in the end, have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course betting on on the internet is unlikely to replace the social part of heading over to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the rules have left a lot of bingo players with no option.
