A lot has been stated in the press recently regarding the bingo industry being hurt because of the anti cigarette law in the UK. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to assist in keeping the industry afloat. But will the web variation of this traditional game offer a escape, or will it not compare to its land based opposite?
Bingo has been an familiar game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game recently had seen a recent increase in popularity with younger members of society opting to hit the bingo halls instead of the discos on a Saturday night. All this is about to get flipped on its head with the legislating of the cigarette ban all over UK.
No longer will enthusiasts be able to smoke while marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public location will not be permitted to allow smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common locations where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The results of the smoking ban can already be felt in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo parlors. Players have dropped and the industry is absolutely fighting for its life. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they haven’t given up on this classic game?
The answer is on the internet. People realise that they can bet on bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a drink and smoke and in the end, enjoy big jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened just about perfectly with the anti cigarette law.
Of course gambling on on the web is unlikely to replace the communal aspect of going over to the bingo hall, but for a group of people the law has left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with little option.
