Could the Anti Smoking Law in Britain Force Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Web?

Much has been written in the press recently regarding the bingo industry struggling as a consequence of the anti smoking law in the United Kingdom. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for huge aid to help keep the industry alive. But can the web version of this quintessential game present a lifeline, or might it in no way compare to its land based kin?

Bingo is an ancient game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had witnessed a recent resurgence in popularity with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo parlours instead of the discos on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the legislating of the cigarette ban throughout England and Wales.

Players will no longer be able to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 all public places will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most favored areas where many people like to puff on cigarettes.

The outcome of the anti smoking law can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already forbidden in the bingo parlours. Numbers have dropped and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where did all the players go? Obviously they haven’t abandoned this established game?

The answer is online. People are now realizing that they can bet on bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a cocktail and smoke and in the end, have a chance at massive prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.

Of course wagering on on the net is unlikely to replace the social part of heading down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of players the rules have left a good many bingo players with no alternative.
